Electroacoustic technology now pervades into every aspect of our lives.

Our smart devices utilise microphones and loudspeakers to operate. We can now dictate to computers, tell our televisions what to display or our smart-speakers what to play thanks to built-in microphones. Acoustic sensors enable cars to park automatically and even assist in safe self-driving. There are future prospects for noise monitoring to be integrated within the urban infrastructure, in workplaces and in our homes, with artificial intelligence managing and optimising the soundscape to achieve the desired environment. Wearable devices can protect our hearing from excessive noise exposure both at work and during leisure activities. Possibilities seem endless and often unpredictable.

We know that standardisation plays a vital role in realising such visionary potential, and innovators might well look to IEC TC 29 for support with the underpinning electroacoustics technology within the wider application.

This will require IEC TC 29 to extend the current scope of its interests and coverage.

We are therefore keen to hear from individuals and groups that are driving new technologies, or indeed form other standardisation bodies covering a wider topic, that have specific performance requirements for electroacoustic devices. Standardisation provides solutions for the independent and universal specification of devices and for assuring that the desired performance is delivered.

IEC TC 29 sees particular potential for collaboration in the rapidly developing areas of future cities and connected autonomous vehicles (CAV).
