Modular instrumentation for acoustic measurement

In many applications acoustic measurements are not done with stand alone sound level meters, but with modular (often computer based and multichannel) systems that are user configurable. Such systems cannot be type approved as a sound level meter according to existing standards. However both end users and application standards have a need for a way to certify such systems in terms of their acoustic performance

What do we cover

WG24 is currently involved in defining a new standard for modern modular measurement systems in terms their acoustic performance. Our approach is to be as close as possible to the existing sound level meter standard in terms of definitions and performance but defining a type approval and periodic check procedure that caters for modularity and configurability.

In addition we defined most SLM features as optional in order to allow more application specific solutions to be certified. E.g. a system intended for indoor use in a test has no need for a wide operating temperature range.

Also we define a raw digital sample stream as a new standardized output as many systems today are being used for pure data recording for later offline processing
